Today is the anniversary of the Belarusian Square.
On December 19, 2010, the so-called presidential elections were held in Belarus. After the polling stations closed, tens of thousands of people demonstrated against the falsification of the “election” results. It became the most massive protest in Belarus in recent years. Andrei Sannikov, the leader of the European Belarus Civil Campaign, was then called the strongest candidate for the presidency of Belarus from the opposition. According to independent observers, he was supposed to go into the second round together with Lukashenka. However, the peaceful protest was brutally suppressed by the police and internal troops.
Subsequently, Charter97.org Editor-in-Chief Natallia Radzina assessed the events of December 19, 2010, as follows: “Ukrainians call Euromaidan the Revolution of Dignity. In 2010, we also had the Uprising of Dignity. The people who took to the streets then began to respect themselves and forced the world to respect the Belarusian people.”
