Grand Duke Henri Of Luxembourg Announces Abdication

He ruled the country for 24 years.

Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg has announced that he is abdicating the throne in favor of his son Guillaume. The 69-year-old monarch announced this in his annual Christmas address to the nation, Radio Liberty reports.

Guillaume will officially take office in October 2025. The 43-year-old prince has reportedly already taken on some of his father's responsibilities. He has also been appointed deputy prime minister of the country.

According to Henri, it is time for him to retire. He ruled Luxembourg for 24 years, ascending the throne on October 7, 2000, after his father Jean, in turn, abdicated after 36 years of rule. The Dukes of Luxembourg belong to the Bourbon-Parma dynasty, a junior branch of the Spanish Bourbons.

Last year, in her New Year's address, the Danish Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication. In January of this year, she was replaced by Crown Prince Frederick, who ascended the throne under the name Frederick X. Margrethe II and Grand Duke Henri are relatives.

In recent years, many European monarchs have begun to abdicate in favor of their heirs. This was done by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands (2013), Albert II of Belgium (2013), and Juan Carlos I of Spain (2014).
