The police called the killing a planned assassination.
An unidentified man opened fire in the centre of New York. Brian Thompson, CEO of one of America's largest health insurance companies, was killed.
The killing of Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a health insurance group (fourth in the Fortune 500), in downtown Manhattan in New York City was a ‘brazen, targeted attack,’ Metropolitan Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told CNN.
She noted that the gunman had been waiting for his victim for several minutes.
‘The New York Police Department's investigative efforts are well underway and we will not rest until we identify and arrest the shooter,’ Tisch promised.
Thompson was shot in the chest as he was outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, where the company's annual investor conference is being held. The top executive was taken to hospital in critical condition and could not be saved.
The police are still searching for the gunman. Witnesses told The New York Post that the perpetrator was a white male who was hanging around near the hotel before the crime. Sources told The New York Times that Thompson arrived at the hotel in advance and the gunman apparently waited for him.
